• Conclusion: “This study shows the effectiveness of 70 mg erenumab treatment in previously therapy-refractory migraine patients under real-life conditions at two independent headache centers.”
• In this retrospective study, German researchers assessed the efficacy of treatment with erenumab during three months before and after initiation of treatment in 82 migraine patients. The researchers noted a significant decrease in headache days, as well as a decrease in average intensity and duration of headache attacks.
• The monoclonal antibody erenumab targets the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor, and has been shown to exert prophylactic efficacy in both episodic (EM) and chronic migraine (CM).
• “Our data also provide information regarding the therapeutic effect of erenumab in patients with MOH [medication overuse headache],” wrote the authors. “The 50% responder rate and reduction of monthly headache days are as good as in patients without MOH. This is in line with a previous study. These results suggest that patients with MOH benefit from erenumab even without performing a withdrawal of acute medication.”
• Limitations of the study include certain incomplete data sets. Furthermore, during antibody therapy, the researchers did not assess additional drugs or non-drug treatment. The researchers also limited assessment to headache days and did not include migraine days.
