Serum alpha-CGRP levels are increased in COVID-19 patients with headache indicating an activation of the trigeminal system - BMC Neurology

Serum alpha-CGRP levels are increased in COVID-19 patients with headache indicating an activation of the trigeminal system - BMC Neurology

Source : https://bmcneurol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12883-023-03156-z

Background Headache is among the most frequent symptoms of acute COVID-19 infection. Its mechanisms remain obscure, but due to its migraine-like characteristics, the activation of the trigeminal system could account...

Conclusion: CGRP levels are increased in COVID-19 patients experiencing headache in the acute phase of this disease, which could explain why headache frequently occurs in COVID-19 and strongly supports a role for trigeminal activation in the pathophysiology of headache in this viral infection.

Conclusions: This patient-level qualitative study suggests that cognitive symptoms are common for persons with migraine, particularly in the pre-headache and headache phases. These findings highlight the importance of assessing and ameliorating these cognitive problems.

The NMDA receptor antagonists memantine and ketamine as anti-migraine agents - Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology

The NMDA receptor antagonists memantine and ketamine as anti-migraine agents - Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology

Source : https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00210-023-02444-2

Migraine is a debilitating disorder affecting females more frequently than males. There is some evidence that drugs targeting glutamate receptors: memantine and ketamine might be beneficial in the therapy of...

Conclusions: Particular attention should be paid to people who have a treatment-resistant form of migraine with aura or have exhausted existing treatment options. For them, the drugs under discussion could represent an interesting alternative in the future.

Conclusions: Translational and basic studies are warranted to investigate the long-term effects of a preventive drug after its discontinuation, starting from what is known about the biology of migraine. In addition, observational studies and, eventually, clinical trials focusing on the effect of discontinuation of migraine prophylactic therapies, are essential to substantiate evidence-based recommendations on stopping rules for both oral preventives and CGRP(-receptor) targeted therapies in migraine.
